FAQ
How does acupuncture work?

Stimulation of Acupuncture points activates the nerves and sends impulses to the brain and body's defence system causing them to release different biochemicals. It reduces stress and relieves pain by releasing natural painkillers in the nervous system and stimulates healing mechanisms. This starts the process of healing and balance in the body. It decreases the excess heat in the blood and inflammation in the body and calms the mind. It stimulates general health and wellbeing, not only relieving the symptoms but also correcting the root of the problems. Because of its proven effectiveness, more and more people around the world use acupuncture for many illnesses.

How long do appointments last?

You should allow 90 minutes for your first appointment. During this time, we will undertake a thorough assessment of your medical history and you will have your first Acupuncture treatment. Subsequent treatments last between 45 and 60 minutes.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on your condition and how you respond to treatment. Each patient is different. We usually find that an older person will respond to the treatment at a slower rate and response to treatment is more rapid in some conditions than others. On average a course of treatment usually comprises 8-12 sessions. For some conditions such as depression and fertility more treatments will be needed.

Is it painful when the needles are inserted?

The needles commonly used in Acupuncture are very thin and usually painless when inserted.

You may experience a slight tingling. However, once they are in place, you should not feel them. Most of our patients say they feel relaxed, uplifted and positive whilst having their Acupuncture treatments.

When will l start to see an improvement?

This depends on your condition. For example, with musculoskeletal pain improvement it is usually rapid. With other conditions such as depression, improvements usually build gently from treatment to treatment.

Will I need to continue with treatment to remain symptom free?

Once your course of treatment has concluded and your health has improved, you may need 'top up' Acupuncture treatment on a fortnightly or monthly basis. We will advise you if this is the case.

How should I prepare for an appointment?

Please ensure that you do not drink alcohol, any soft drinks or any drinks containing caffeine such as coffee or tea before treatment (including your first appointment).

Refrain from having a large meal at least an hour prior to your treatment.

Please wear a mask and loose fitting clothes during all sessions.
